What is User Feedback?

User feedback is any input collected from people who use your website or app. It tells you what works, what does not, and what visitors expect. Feedback can be numbers (like ratings and scores) or words (like comments and suggestions). Organizations use it to make better decisions about their digital services.[1]

Why Does User Feedback Matter?

Large websites serve thousands of visitors every day. A government portal, a bank's online service, or a university website cannot guess what users need. Feedback removes the guesswork.

Content teams use feedback to find pages that confuse visitors. If a healthcare site's insurance form gets repeated complaints, the team knows to rewrite it. IT teams use feedback to spot technical problems, like broken links or slow pages, before they affect more users. Types of User Feedback

Feedback falls into two groups: active and passive.

Active feedback is what you ask for directly. Examples include:

  • Net Promoter Score (NPS) — A single question asking how likely a user is to recommend your service, scored 0 to 10.

Passive feedback comes from watching how people behave. Examples include:

How to Collect Feedback Effectively

Timing matters. Research shows that asking for feedback right after a task gives better answers than asking days later.[3] If someone just submitted a form on your insurance portal, ask them about it now.

Placement matters too. Reaction buttons work best when placed directly on the content they measure. A "Was this helpful?" widget at the bottom of a knowledge base article gets more responses than a pop-up survey.

Keep it short. People visiting a government service page or a banking portal want to finish their task. A one-click reaction button gets far more responses than a ten-question survey.

How to Use Feedback Data

Raw feedback needs sorting before it becomes useful. Common approaches include:

  • Sentiment analysis — Sorting text responses into positive, negative, or neutral groups.
  • Theme grouping — Organizing comments by topic, such as "navigation" or "form errors."
  • Trend tracking — Watching scores over time to spot problems early. A sudden drop after a site update signals something went wrong.
  • Segmentation — Comparing feedback across groups. Mobile users may report different problems than desktop users.

Why Feedback Channels Are a Compliance Requirement

For regulated websites, feedback serves a legal purpose too. Accessibility standards like WCAG 2.1 and the European Accessibility Act require that users can report barriers they encounter.[4] A screen reader user who hits a broken form needs a way to tell you.

This means your feedback channel itself must be accessible. If the feedback widget fails keyboard navigation or lacks proper labels, it blocks the very people who need it most.
